Fees

How each fee is set, before you sign

These are flat fees for the lawyer’s work. They don’t grow with the number of calls, letters or court dates. If a case ends sooner than planned, the fee doesn’t shrink, and if it runs longer, it doesn’t grow.

  • Tickets and reckless driving

A ticket is one flat fee per citation. Reckless driving or a super-speeder ticket is quoted higher, because points and a suspension are on the table.

    • Record review and talks with the prosecutor

    • Appearing for you where the court allows it

    • Driving-record and insurance advice on a reckless charge

    • A trial, if a reckless case needs one

    Traffic tickets
  • A license hearing on its own

For drivers who have a lawyer for the criminal case, or no case yet, and need the license hearing handled. One flat fee per hearing.

    • The hearing request, filed before the deadline

    • Preparing and appearing at the hearing

    License hearings
  • A DUI

The license hearing and the criminal case together, through the last date before trial. A second or later charge, or a commercial license, is quoted higher for the steeper penalties and the disqualification rules.

    • License hearing request and hearing

    • Reports, test results and video reviewed

    • Every court date before trial

    • A look at an earlier conviction and how it counts

    DUI defense
  • A jury trial

If you and your lawyer decide to go to trial, the trial is one more flat fee, agreed before we set the date. It is added to the DUI fee.

    • Jury selection, the trial and the verdict

Each fee covers one case in one court and is set in the engagement letter you sign.

Paid to someone else

What the fee leaves out

These go to the court, the state or an outside expert, not to us. We tell you what each usually runs in your court before you sign.

  • Fines and court costs

Set by the judge or the court’s schedule, and paid to the court.

  • Bond

Paid to the jail or a bonding company, and often returned when the case ends.

  • Classes and evaluations

Risk-reduction classes, a clinical evaluation, or treatment a court orders.

  • Ignition interlock

Leased from a provider when a permit or a sentence calls for one.

  • Expert witnesses

A toxicologist or a crash reconstructionist, only if you agree one is worth it.

  • License reinstatement

The state’s fee to give a suspended license back.

Paying

About the money

Can I pay in parts?

Yes. Most clients pay a third when they sign and the rest over the following two months. We write the schedule into the engagement letter.

What if my case ends early?

The fee is the same. A flat fee is for the stage of the case, not for the hours, so an early dismissal or a quick plea doesn’t change it.

What if it turns out to be more complicated?

The fee doesn’t grow inside its stage. The only time you’d pay more is a step you choose that the fee leaves out, like a jury trial, and we agree that price first.

Is the first video call charged?

No. The first call is twenty minutes to hear what happened, tell you the fee and answer what you ask. It doesn’t commit you to anything.

Find out which fee is yours

Twenty minutes on video, and you’ll know the price before you decide anything.
